A much-anticipated outdoor rock concert will headline the 17th annual Quarry Days weekend this year. The newly formed rock back "Judd Hoos" will be introduced to Dell Rapids at the Saturday night concert, which will begin at 9:30 p.m. at the Volunteer Park softball diamond.
Robert Zwart, former drummer of the popular Dells local band "Zwarte," will lead his new band into the Quarry Days venue.
Robert, as most Dells area rock music enthusiasts know, has split with his brother Randall Zwart. The dynamic duo formed one of the top rock bands in the upper Midwest. "Zwarte" was the staple headliner for the annual Sturgis motorcycle rally and has cut successful album releases.
"Members of our new band 'Judd Hoos' are hard working, sober and gifted musicians," Robert stated. "That's why we're successful out of the gate. We're creating excitement."
"Judd Hoos" has already performed before enthusiastic audiences at many area events, recently returning from a Lake Benton festival. In addition to Robert, the new band has Chris Hornick on bass, Shane Funk on drums and Drew Lerdal playing guitar.
Robert Zwart has stepped out from behind the drums and is now the lead vocalist for the new band.
"Just singing is something I know, something I can do," Robert said. "I harmonized for years with Zwarte. Randy was the voice of Zwarte. I'm starting all over."
There appears to be no hard feelings between the two talented siblings.
The former Zwarte band is now known as the "Randall Zwart Band."
"They're doing fine," Robert said. "They are still a very popular band. Randy found a drummer and a bass player from 'Junk,' another area band that folded." Robert Zwart expects a big crowd on Saturday night for his first "Judd Hoos" performance in his hometown Dell Rapids.
